Why waste management companies should invest in road safety initiatives

A considerable number, if not all, FTSE 100 companies expect a certain level of service and product investment from their waste management company. These industry leaders need to know their waste is being transported within the industry-specific waste management requirements and that the service provided reaches the level of sustainability expected.

With some waste management companies processing and transporting in excess of 1bn tonnes of waste each year, it is vital that your chosen waste management company has the knowledge to process a wide range of waste streams but also has the latest vehicles to safely transport it.

GBN Services are the leading skip hire, recycling and waste company servicing London and the South East and are making continual investments into transport and sorting equipment at their six recycling centres. Over the past 30 years, they have developed a service and fleet that complies with numerous road safety initiatives.

CLOCS, FORS and Crossrail are three key road safety requirements industry-leading companies expect from their waste management provider. This requirement is recognised by GBN and has resulted in a recent investment of £250,000 on an in-house driver training scheme, ensuring all members of staff driving their 200 vehicles throughout London and the South East are continually monitored and tested, safeguarding their industry-leading driving standards.

Highly skilled drivers need the latest vehicles, so GBN invested in a series of Mercedes Arocs skip loaders and rear steer dustcarts, all of which meet Euro 6 emissions standards. Each vehicle is equipped with additional safety features required for driving on London’s busy roads, such as blind spot proximity sensors, 4-way cameras, side scans and audible warning signals.

Having made considerable investment into new skip loaders and dustcarts, it was imperative that GBN completed the build of a new state-of-the-art workshop at their Uxbridge Depot. This facility is part of their on-going investment in improving and maintaining high standards of road worthiness for all vehicles. It also demonstrates their commitment to maintain and exceed their FORS Silver and CLOCS accreditation.

Their new facility at GBN’s busiest depot, Uxbridge, includes a DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) inspection pit with shaker plates and computerised brake testing, ensuring all of their vehicles are maintained to the highest standard.
