Case Study: Prudential RideLondon 2014

Project summary

Prudential RideLondon, the second largest sporting event organised by the London Marathon, was held on the 9th and 10th August. For the second year running GBN Services, working in partnership with A1 Event and Exhibition Cleaners were invited to provide cleaning and waste management services at the finish line.

Prudential RideLondon is an annual two-day festival of cycling: a true legacy of the 2012 Games. This flagship event is part of the Mayor’s and TFL’s cycling programme. It provides a fantastic platform to help fulfil the Mayor’s and TFL’s goal of encouraging more people to cycle more safely.

The Strategy

Our challenge was to make sure the event areas were kept clear of litter at all times, provide bins for the general public visiting the event and ensure all the event suppliers’ waste generated was cleared quickly and effectively over the two day period.

Even the remnants of hurricane Bertha on Sunday didn’t sway our team from carrying out the job in hand well within the time specification given. In fact, it was hard to believe an event of that scale had ever taken place when looking at the spotlessly clean Mall and surrounding areas at the end of Sunday evening.

“It was traceable from source back to the tip where it was dropped. It was an example of where GBN went above and beyond”, says Mr Cooper.

“Having reporting and transparency for waste and recycling is crucial for getting sign off and getting jobs under the Considerate Constructors Scheme and BREEAM.”

We used ‘Crossrail’ compliant vehicles, which have many additional safety features to ensure drivers are made aware of vulnerable road users such as cyclists, throughout the event. GBN Services have heavily invested in these types of vehicles in the last few years and are in full support of the Mayor’s and TFL’s cycling programme.
