What’s coming next?

As we move steadily towards another winter, now is the time to check that we have all the necessary precautionary measures in place to deal with whatever winter may throw at us.

For yards and roads and walkway:

Do we have a sufficient stock of de-icing materials, including tools (and required PPE) for spreading the de-icers?

Are the signs around the site clean and legible so they can be easily seen in low lighting conditions?

Are lighting systems all working?

For vehicles:

Is there a good stock of de-icing fluids? Ideally the trigger spray type in preference to aerosols as these are a better choice for the environment.

Have vehicles winter coolant been checked to ensure it is the right strength?

Do we have frost/ice resistant screen wash in vehicles?

For buildings:

Have the heating systems been serviced?

Are alternative heating systems available in case the main heating system fails?

For staff:

Do staff know what must be prioritised in the event of snow or icy conditions?

In most cases a short toolbox talk / team briefing will suffice to ensure that staff know that safe walkways and safe roadways need to be prioritised to ensure that people and vehicles can move around safely. This isn’t just spreading some de-icer and thinking the job is done, it also means checking on a daily basis that walkways, roadways, lighting and signage are all in good conditions.

In very icy or rain and snow conditions it may be necessary to check and re-do the de-icing processes at intervals throughout the day to ensure that you, your staff and visitors can move around as safely as is reasonably practicable.
