Recycling With GBN

GBN is committed to recycling as much waste as possible. Here’s how we do it.

Recycling With GBN

Across all our recycling centres, GBN Services achieves very high recycling levels, which combined with our RDF solution can help deliver 100% diversion from landfill for our customers. We have worked hard to achieve these high recycling levels, and are always looking at how to increase our recycling and recovery activities and improve the sustainability of our waste solutions. We invest in new technology as it becomes available to enable us to segregate more and more materials and move waste up the hierarchy. For example, we have a wood chipper that allows us to convert waste wood into a valuable item by generating wood chips for use in fibre board production.

Separating materials for recycling

Much of the waste we process arrives at our recycling centres unsegregated. Where possible, GBN Services uses a sorting process to derive valuable materials from our customers’ waste that is ready to be reused. When this waste arrives at the recycling centres, it is firstly separated into major waste streams by grab machines. Waste is then further sorted using a wide range of recycling equipment including; trommels, air separation kinetic flow systems for soils and stone separation ancillary screening equipment and picking belts for manual sorting. The light fraction is processed by shredding and further sorting. Find out what happens to the waste when it is separated.

Diverting Waste from Landfill

When we have sorted waste material to maximise what can be separated for reuse and recycling we bale the remaining residue and send this as refuse-derived fuel (RDF) to an energy generating plant. Bales are regularly checked to ensure they consistently achieve the exacting standards of the RDF market. At these facilities, the energy embodied in these waste materials is used to generate heat and power replacing the need for use of fossil fuels. This helps our clients reduce their environmental impact.

We have installed state of the art equipment at two of our facilities to help ensure that as much waste materials as possible are diverted from landfill.

98% Diversion from Landfill

GBN Services are committed to our goal of diverting 100% of our incoming waste from landfill. We currently have a 98% diversion rate and are constantly looking for ways to improve the process to achieve this.

We have invested in a unique combination of the latest technology to ensure that whilst we prioritise the sorting of materials for reuse and recycling we can achieve maximum landfill diversion by generating a refuse derived fuel material that can be used to generate power without the need to burn precious fossil fuels.

This process and the others we use allow us to hit our targets for diversion from landfill and we are always working on better ways to recycle as much as possible.
